In 2017 I started a project called “12 Days of Solstice” where I illustrated a sign in the zodiac, one a day, for 12 days, leading up to the Winter Solstice.

For the 2018 edition, I decided to combine my ceramics work with this illustrative prompt!

The plates were wheel thrown in advance, with Cone 6 porcelain and trimmed and slowly dried. I had a few loose sketches that were then freehanded on to the plate, and painted with a commercial underglaze. Additional line details are then etched away, and a light splatter of thin underglaze applied. They are finally coated in a food safe, clear glaze.
